The previous reviewer of Mike Poulton's adaptation of Schiller's play rates it poorly, but it isn't clear that he was reviewing Poulton's adaptation. Amazon handles adaptations and translations badly, and suggests alternate editions that are not Poulton's adaptation at all. And the reviewer is correct that pushing the "Look Inside" button gets you a different version than Poulton's. However, I've now read this particular adaptation in the costly printed edition; I don't think that any other editions of this adaptation are available. I agree with the many reviewers of stagings based on it, who nearly uniformly considered the adaptation to be brilliant. Reading it makes me want to attend a peformance based on Poulton's adaptation.

Schiller's original play was called "A Dramatic Poem". During his lifetime, Schiller himself was involved in adapting his own works for the stage, which involved cuts and variations from the original published text. As Poulton explains in his introduction, he was adapting the play for contemporary audiences, and seriously reorganized and cut the original. These changes are in addition to the necessary task of translating the German verse into fairly plainspoken English. I like to think that Schiller himself, were he around today, would admire Poulton's success with Don Carlos.

Don Carlos German Edition Schiller 9783150000380 Books Reviews

This is one of the sturdiest long plays in the repertoire with riveting scenes and vivid characters that Verdi turned into an opera. Spellbinding if you ever have a chance to see it performed.
I ordered this after seeing the preview, in which the translation was pretty nice. And guess what, what I received is totally a different version. Not only the translation makes you laugh, the formatting is so horrible that you can barely read it. And there are just a million typos on every pages (they would print "your" as "tour" and "king" as "ki.g") which makes me doubt which developing nation pirated it and sold it on . Since this is sold by directly I would expect a bit more honesty in item description and a reasonable price, this is TOTALLY different from what the description said except for the cover of the book. This is not worth 50 cents, seriously, I could NOT read it.

And guess what the table of contents in the books says?
Section 1 .... *page number*
Section 2 .... *page number*
Section 3 .... *page number*
Section 4 .... *page number*
...etc
And aha, they don't even separate the sections based on the acts.
